North Carolina LATAs (Local Access Transport Area) or Telephone Calling Zones

 

WHAT IS A LATA?
The federal Communications Commission has divided the United States into many areas which are known as “LATAs”(Local Area Transport Area). North Carolina has seven LATAs.

  • 704 – Charlotte exchange and surrounding communities
  • 910 – Wilmington and Fayetteville LATAs
  • 919 – Raleigh LATA and portion of Fayetteville LATA
  • 336 – Greensboro LATA and portion of Charlotte LATA
  • 252 – Rocky Mount LATA and portion of Fayetteville LATA
  • 828 – Asheville LATA and portion of Charlotte LATA

 

WHAT IS A INTRA-LATA CALL?
A call which originates and terminates within the same LATA is an Intra-LATA Call. These calls appear on your telephone bill under the heading: “Independent Company Calls.”

WHAT IS AN INTER-LATA CALL?
A call which originates in one LATA and terminates in another LATA within the state is an INTRASTATE Inter-LATA call. A call which originates in one LATA and terminates in another LATA in ANOTHER STATE is an INTERSTATE Inter-LATA call. These calls appear on your phone bill under the heading: “AT&T Communications Calls,” or Alternate Carrier Calls.”
